The Wenlock River on the border of the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve is one of the most beautiful rivers in Australia. It supports a population of critically endangered Speartooth Sharks. Robert got the chance of a lifetime to go in a helicopter and see the river from above. Robert couldn`t wait to get up in the air and check out the river. In June of 2010 the Wenlock basin was declared a wild river which means it is now protected from future destructive development, such as in stream mining, damming, irrigation and over extraction of water. Even with this wild rivers act in place the Wenlock River continues to be threatened due to proposed strip mining on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve.

Get to see the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve up close and the beautiful springs that live within the wetlands. Ranger Barry Lyon shows off some of the unique plant life and Northern Kaanju Traditional Owner shows Terri and Bindi how his people utilise the lands resources, such as making oil from tree leaves.

Also Bindi finds a Water Rat while discovering what animals they have on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. Bindi shares some cool and interesting facts about this cute little guy.

Also Robert shows off an amazing colony of flying foxes, while Kate and Brian of the Rescue Unit release a Flying Fox back to the colony after finding him caught on a barbed wire fence.

No-one else I'd rather be traveling with than the Irwins and no-where I'd rather be than on the SIWR, so that's me sorted!! How exciting to have been given the chance to view the Wenlock from the air. How beautiful it looked. Steve said it was the most beautiful place on earth, and if Steve said so that's good enough for me. What a lovely water rat Bindi found. I have only recently stumbled on Bindi's diaries, which I enjoyed reading enormously and I am so glad that Bindi seems to still have the pet rat which was bought for her shortly after her dad died (brought a tear to my eye I can tell you; still does). So glad that you still have your pet rat darling. I know from experience how hard a rat can bite, and that was just a little English rat, so I hate to think of the sort of bite this size rat could inflict. I got bit trying to rescue a rat from the jaws of my cat 'SUI' (guess who she is named after). I love all my trips with the Irwins, but my favourite part of the trip so far has to be that beautiful Scrub Python than Terri showed us. What a beautiful example of a beautiful snake. Take care everyone. Love to all, Gail xxxxxxxxxxxx
