Minka The Green Sea Turtle Release
Release Date: Thu, May 27th
Synopsis:
Today is a special day for Minka the Green Sea Turtle. Terri, Bindi, Robert and the Rescue Unit are releasing Minka back to the wild.
In November 2009, the rescue unit received a call from Moreton Bay Marine Parks to say that a construction worker on the bridge had spotted a turtle with a crab pot wrapped around its front left flipper. The Rescue Unit were called in and James and Andy responded. James and Andy rescued Minka and released the rope and crab pot wrapped around the front flipper. Unfortunately Bonnie an Australia Zoo vet was forced to amputate the front flipper due to the severe injury caused by the entanglement. Minka has since made an excellent recovery and thanks to fundraising by the Irwin family a Satellite Tracker was attached to Minka to track her long-term survivorship and journey back to the wild.

I love this episode as, to me, this is what Steve was all about - rescue and rehabilitation (and conservation of course). Wonderful that his work is being carried on with the dedication and commitment that these darling creatures deserve. For me there's one thing missing on the platform of that boat, one beautiful person who will always have a special place in my heart (for you Steve xxx).
When we talk of danger to, threat to, or destruction of wildlife, whether it be on land or sea, man always pops up in the equation - funy that!!! Just a little more thought and we would have less injuries and fatalities.
The tracking project is a wonderful, very important project, but I do hope in time that the tracking devices attached to these lovely turtles will become a bit more fetching (attractive) and less obvious (not the most glamourous outerwear for such dignified creatures).
If you go to Turtle Tracking or Zoo News, there is a beautiful picture of Bindi with another turtle, Rapael, who is also in the tracking project. They are both doing very well, which is great news.
Both wild and free like they ought to be - wonderful .............
Love to all, Gail xxxxxxxxxxx

Such a wonderful ending, to a sad beginning. Thank you to everyone at Australia Zoo
